Our Principal, Martin Silk MEng (Hons), MIEAust, CPEng, NER
Martin has more than 20 years’ experience in Structural Engineering in the Heritage, Residential Commercial, Industrial and Insurance sectors. He has managed projects from conceptual design through to construction including a range of historical building refurbishments and alterations. In addition, Martin specialises in structural integrity reports and project management for the repair and refurbishment of damaged properties following Insurance Claims.
Martin commenced private practice in 2016, prior to which he was managing the Perth operations for Intelara since 2011, and working as a Structural Engineer in the UK and Brisbane from 1997 to 2011.
Martin is a Chartered Professional Engineer registered with the National Engineering Register, delivering consulting engineering services. Martin is a member of Engineering Heritage WA, and a contributor towards Western Australia’s rich engineering heritage.
- Heritage building refurbishment and alterations including: Dilapidation reports, advice on conservation, repair and strengthening, etc.
- Structural design using steel, concrete, masonry and timber for heritage, residential, commercial and industrial projects
- Inspection and reporting for structural damage claims for the insurance sector
- Project management – including working with clients and design team members
Ian Maitland OAM, FIEAust, CPEng, NER is the only registered heritage engineer in Western Australia and one of five in the country.
He was awarded the John Monash medal for 2012, Engineers Australia’s highest honour to an individual for outstanding contribution to the cause of engineering heritage.
In January 2016 Ian was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia, for services to Cultural Heritage and Civil Engineering.
Ian is immediate past chair of Engineering Heritage Western Australia (EHWA) and was a board member of Engineering Heritage Australia (EHA) in 2015 and 2016.
Until his retirement in early 2017, Ian was principal of Maitland Heritage Engineering (MHE), which specialised in the conservation of historic places including civil engineering works, buildings, monuments, ruins and other historic civil engineering
Prior to commencing private practice in 1990, he was Managing Director of Connell Wagner WA (now Aurecon) for twenty years. He has registration
in Civil Engineering (General) and specific registration in Heritage and Conservation Engineering, with the National Engineering Registration Board. (Now called National Engineering Registration – NER).
In 2008 MHE’s predecessor company MCSE won an Engineers Australia award for the structuralenhancement of St George’s Cathedral Perth. Subsequently MHE has won awards for the structural remediation of Trinity Church and the Treasury Building Balconies, both in Perth City. In addition, in the past five years it was structural and /or heritage engineer for several award-winning projects, presented by the Heritage Council of WA, City of Perth, Royal Australian Institute of Architects, the Master
Builders Federation of WA & UNESCO Asia Pacific.
MHE and MCSE prepared engineering reports for inclusion in more than 100 Conservation Plans, and in total worked on more than 200 heritage projects.
Ian joined Quoin Consulting in January 2017, as a Specialist Heritage Structural Consultant.
